Yes, it is made of particle board. Not your parents furniture. And you have to assemble it, which always takes longer than one expects.
Overall, this is a nice unit for what it is. You get a good bit of attractively arranged storage in a small vertical space. If you are matching this color theme, then getting this is a no-brainer, but otherwise you might want to go with something else. I’m not a fan of the gray painted interior spaces. Assembly isn’t too difficult, but put aside some time for it (me about 3hrs). The pieces are bulky and it can be a long process getting the dowels lined up with the proper holes. I just wish it came a little better protected as some of the panels got a little banged up in shipping. The metal accents are nice and the particle board panels (CS) are sturdier than those from some other manufacturers. The fit and finish of the bottom cabinet door wasn’t perfect, but it can be adjusted. It says not to use a drill, but you are going to want one for most of the screw work.
South Shore is a decent brand. The overall unit was heavier than I expected, close to 100lbs.

Nice, but over-priced and needs better packing for protection.
I feel that the price of this is way too high, even if it had arrived in flawless condition. Unfortunately, UPS is known for punching holes into large heavy boxes to create handles for themselves for easier carrying. They are also notorious for dropping and banging things around.
So, keep that in mind before you spend a lot of money on build-your-own particle board furniture that is more likely than not to be damaged in shipping. I was hoping this would make it without damage but I have enough experience by now to know that it was wishful thinking. So, right off the bat, I would say that this needs better packing to protect it. The heavier something is, the more likely it’s going to arrive damaged. Mine came with a scratch and a chip in one corner but structurally it is still sound.
This type of furniture is heavy, but it is more delicate than solid wood furniture and you have to be very careful with it. Once you have it set up, it’s best not to move it, or if you do, take everything off of it and very careful try to lift and move it rather than drag it. Having said that, the shelving is just what I needed to get some books up on a higher shelf in order to protect them fro the dogs. It was a little bit of a pain to put together, but it looks nice for the effort. I didn’t think I was going to like the color of it as much as I did, but I think it’s nice. I’m not fond of the gray parts, though and I may repaint it.
I do think this is quite a bit over-priced. I’ve purchased 7-foot tall solid oak bookcases for less.

Heavy, dense bookshelf/cabinet.
Seems sturdy and solid.
Holds a good amount.
Mine came in perfect condition (nothing chipped or broken.)
Not so good:
It’s very, very heavy! The box was 98 pounds; I don’t know how the UPS driver carried it without breaking anything!
The color is pretty drab; I think we’ll be painting it.
The pieces (like most ready-to-assemble furniture) didn’t all line up right and didn’t all fit together tightly: we had to drill some new holes and use some glue.
Just FYI: Putting it together took 2 people almost 2 hours. Definitely assemble this where you’ll be using it, because I don’t think it would move that well or that easily!
