I’m going to compare this to the standard pressed-sawdust five-shelf bookcases that I have a lot of, and that I would have bought another of if I hadn’t bought this.
Lightweight!! My pasteboard bookcases are in the 60-70 pound range, and simply trying to move them involves a lot of shoving and “walking” it around. This is light enough I can pick it up and carry it to a new place. Let’s not mention buying locally (much cheaper than online for normal bookcases) and hauling things up three flights of stairs to my apartment.
Easy to assemble. Though not much easier than wood ones, since they use a small allen wrench that can be hard to grip for those of us (average women) without a lot of hand strength.
One less shelf. A normal “five-shelf bookcase” actually has six shelves, counting the top. You can’t put books up there, but you can put light regular stuff, and I find I miss that.
No adjustable shelves. Most bookcases have at least three adjustable shelves, but this has none. Of course, I rarely use anything but the average shelf height, so it doesn’t much bother me.
I do worry about the sturdiness, though. When assembling it, I was surprised that the screws didn’t seem to want to fully tighten. They just kept turning. I eventually realized it was because I was actually bending the metal rods on the side, flattening them with the pressure from the screws. I stopped there, but I’m a woman of average height, weight, and hand strength. I can’t loosen a screw most men have really tightened, and I can’t get them that tight either. If _I_ can bend these, everyone else should be really careful.
Note: I bought two; this and ORE International R597-5 Five Tier Metal Book Rack. This is a little deeper, but it’s not as sturdy (that one has slightly thicker poles and rods, and I couldn’t flatten anything with the screws). If you want to store lightweight stuff, there’s not much difference, but I’m not sure how this would handle a full load of books. The other is holding magazines well. Given the choice, I’ll probably buy the other before I buy this one again. But this is still probably better than a heavy fake-wood one, even with the missing shelf.

Good looking shelf for cheap
I was shocked by the relative quality of this inexpensive shelf. When you are putting it together, you can see minor details that signal that it is not the nicest shelf; but when it is all set up and filled, it looks very nice! It is very easy and intuitive to set up. There is a little bit of wobble, but honestly far less than I expected. I was not interested in spending much for a shelf, and I am very pleased with how good this one looks.
(An earlier reviewer wrote that she stripped the screws when setting up her shelf, so I was very careful when I was putting it together. When screwing the pieces together, I would feel almost a popping sensation; and I would feel a lot of give as though I had stripped the screw. If I kept turning the screw, however, it would eventually tighten quite nicely. So, if you read that review and are worried about stripping the screws, don’t be worried.)

Measures 26″ fully assembled, NOT 24″
The shelf is sturdy enough and easy to put together. (and I’m the one who has no patience putting a bunch of crap together)
The only thing is — The shelf by itself is 24″, and when assembled WITH THE SIDES it’s 26″.
I bought this to fit the inside of a small closet that measures (25″) inside. But when I put in the assembled shelving unit, it did not fit! Fully assembled — it’s 26″ width.
